Some spotting to the front board of volume I, minor rubbing to the joints on both volumes, and the front outer joint of volume II has a hairline crack, but the board is holding. Corners sharp, with some abrasions. Despite these defects, the spines are entirely unfaded, which is unusual for this binding. WIth all faults, still a gift-quality example of this popular and well-regarded memoir, among the best in both the military and presidential classes. Grant finished the memoirs on his deathbed, and was convinced by his friend Mark Twain to use his publisher, Charles L. Webster, who sold the book by subscription only.
