The very scarce first edition of this unique and informative work on spices, cosmetics and perfumes by Alpheus Hyatt Verrill, in the original unclipped dust wrapper. The first edition. Very scarce. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece and monochrome vignettes. This work was written by A. Hyatt Verrill, an American zoologist, inventor, explorer,  illustrator and author, best known for his science fiction works. This work describes a range of perfumes, spices and cosmetics, with little known facts, sections on their origins and history and their manufacturing processes. This unique work informs the reader on how these substances bring life to food, perfume and cleanliness. In the publisher's original cloth with the original unclipped dust wrapper. In the publisher's original cloth with the original clipped dust wrapper. Externally very smart with fading to the spine and head of the front board and slight rubbing to the head and tail of the spine resulting in wear to the cloth. Light offsetting to the front endpapers with age toning. The wrap is smart with marks, light sunning to the spine, slight rubbing and creasing to the extremities and the odd chip. Tape repairs to the verso. Very Good Indeed
