About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1908. Boards. Very good +. [HISTORY] [BIOGRAPHY]. First illustrated edition. 12mo; 47pp; grey boards, lettering and portrait of Lincoln stamped on front in dark brown, brown cloth shelf-back; ownership in pencil on ffep; glazed half-tone fp with tissue guard; fore edges untrimmed; unopened rear fly-leaves; light wear to boards, small ink spot and scratch on front; very good plus. The author, Mary Raymond Shipman Andrews (1860-1936), was an American writer of children's fiction and some biography. This historically based story of Abraham Lincoln first appeared in Scribner's Magazine in July 1906. Historians have taken issue with some of its content as romantic and not accurate.

Reviews

On Dec 20 2020, a reader said:
A perfect tribute to the modesty, kindness and pure humanity of Lincoln. Her story teaches us the strength of love over hate, of humility over arrogance, of kindness over winning. In this fiction comes a truth fir all to see: only the strong can be gentle; and only the great can endure personal hardship and strengthen others.
