PECK, George W. Peck's Bad Boy and His Pa. 12mo, original pictorial terra cotta cloth (moderate rubbing at edges), spine lettered in gilt, pp. xiv, [2], 196, [16] ads + 19 wood engraved plates (including frontispiece) from drawings by Gean Smith. Chicago: Belford, Clarke & Co., 1883.
First Edition, first issue, first state, with rules above and below the copyright notice at page [iv] a full 7/8" apart, and with no text, save the advertisements, after p. 96. "The earliest copies do not have in the front matter 'A Card from the Author' dated Milwaukee, Feb. 1883 [and not present here]. Copies without this feature are so seldom found that one may be permitted the suspicion that they represent a pre-publication issue."-Peter Parley to Penrod (note added to the 2nd printing of PPtoP), pp. 67-68. "...filled with unabated mischief and spectacular pranks...illustrations are by Gene Smith."-Morgn Library 240. Very good copy in morocco backed cloth slipcase by Macdonald.
