About This Item

Boston: Geo. H. Ellis, 1886. Early Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 5 1/8 X 7 3/4 Inches. 266 PP. Frances Power Cobbe (1842-1904) was a leading social reformer and feminist voice of her age. She worked tirelessly to advance the rights of women and animals in Britain during her lifetime. Cobbe explored the afterlife in her writing as well, although she was a devout critic of "spiritualism" and the like. Cobbe chose to study the actions and words of those close to death, but not quite gone yet. One close to death is, according to Cobbe, our "forerunner on the hill-top" and perhaps shows "by his looks and actions, since he is too far off to speak to us, that he beholds from his ‘Peak in Darien' an Ocean yet hidden from our view?"

Cobbe was a leading spokeswoman of her day on women's suffrage as well as wife-beating. A passionate believer who spoke of the benefits of equality and morality, perhaps before her time. Housed in original issue brown cloth with gilt title-stamping to spine. Original "W.B. Clarke" Booksellers (Boston) label to FFEP. Ads excised from end.
