Miss Read greets retirement with considerable excitement, and is determined to prove wrong those friends who doubt that she will be able to cope lone.In fact, she is pressed to join all sorts of activities in Beech Green, particularly by the Annetts who need help in church matters, and she has to take evasive action.
Her friend Amy suggests that they both visit the beautiful city of Florence,to 'kick up their heels' while Amy's husband is attending a conference. When they return,Miss read settles down to what she hopes will be an endless stream of lazy days. It is not entirely so,of course.Henry Mawne has some trouble with his new wife, and tries to enlist Miss Read's sympathy, with acrimonious results. She learns ti turn a deaf ear to the attentions of John Jenkins and his persistent offers of marriage, ignoring especially Amy's enthusiastic promptings from the sidelines.
The Fairacre characters,so well loved from the previous books, weave a colourful background: Bob Willet and his young helper,Joseph Coggs, reign supreme in the garden, whilst Mrs Pringle continues to cluck over the state of Miss Read's housekeeping.Miss Read herself has to tackle new problems ranging from being able to cope with strange electronic appliances to the worries of advancing age.
The many fans of Fairacre's retired schoolmistress will be delighted that her good humour and good sense triumph in the end,and she does indeed settle down to a peaceful reitrement.

Synopsis

Open the gate to Fairacre, America’s favorite English village. Having bid a last farewell to her pupils at Fairacre School, Miss Read settles down to what she hopes will be a relaxing retirement. It is not entirely so, of course. She finds herself as busy and in demand as ever: on holiday in Florence, helping with church and school affairs, and offering a kindly ear to her eccentric neighbors. With her teaching days behind her, Miss Read discovers her talent for writing, opening a new and exciting chapter in her life — and bringing to a close her stories of life in Fairacre, the timeless English village beloved by millions of readers.
