New edition (first published in a limited edition in 1951), issued as Volume 128 in the Civilization of the American Indian series. 372 pp, with illustrations and index. Slight dust soiling to top edge of text block, bookplate on half-title page, else a fine copy. Dust jacket is price-clipped and lightly rubbed. According to the jacket, "Hyde tells the story of the Pawnees objectively, reinforcing it with firsthand accounts gleaned from many sources, both Indian and white" and "looks far back into tribal history, assessing Pawnee oral history against anthropological evidence and examining military patterns and cultural characteristics.
