FIRST EDITION (stated), Fiction HC w/DJ, VERY GOOD/GOOD+. Harcourt, Brace & World, 1961. A university professor from Poland where he survived a Nazi death camp, but his wife and children perished, becomes the owner of a pawn shop; described as "an exceptional work of fiction." The grey cloth over boards covers with silver stampings on fr. & spine and black lettering on spine only. Except for let spine end curls, mostly at the top and a prior owner's name in heavy black ink on f.f.e.p. book is solid, tight & unmarked, in excellent condition. The D.J., with its poignant design by Ellen Raskin only minimally effected, has several small tears & chips along the top & base, plus a large chip on the back. Overall, book is rated Very Good; D.J.. Good+

Synopsis

Sol Nazerman survived the Holocaust. His wife and children did not-he witnessed their murder in a concentration camp. He is now a Harlem pawnbroker, emotionally dead and indifferent to the desperation around him, running his shop as a front for a racketeer. Made into an Academy Award-winning film starring Rod Steiger, this is one of the most moving pieces in modern fiction.
