About This Item

Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Company, 1976. First edition. First edition, first printing. [vi], 186 pp. Bound in publisher's original beige leatherette boards with spine lettered in black. Very Good with heavy foxing to edges, in a Near Fine dust jacket, light wear, unclipped ($5.95). The first book in Butler's Patternist series to be published, but the last in the series' chronology.

Synopsis

Patternmaster  is Octavia Butler's first published novel. It is the fourth book chronologically in Butler's  Patternmaster series .  Wild Seed  (1980) ,  Mind of my Mind  (1977), and  Clay's Ark  (1984) follow. Another novel,  Survivor  (1978), was part of the series, but Butler later disowned the novel and declined to have it reprinted.  Central to the series are Patternists - people with telepathic powers, ruled by a head Patternmaster who can heal and destroy. In  Patternmaster,  the son of the ruler, Coransee, will stop at nothing to get the throne, even killing his brother. The novel is set in the distant future, and the Patternists are the dominant race, set apart from Clayarks, who are 'diseased' and animalistic, and another mute race that is used as slaves.
