About This Item

New York: Alfred A. Knopf. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1986. First Edition; First Printing. Cloth. 0394503651 . First Trade edition/first printing, predeced only by a private publication by Franklin Library in unread Fine condition in alike dust-jacket. From the collection of Betty Anderson, legendary art director of publisher Knopf in the late 20th century, as evidenced by her (small and unobtrusive) inventory number; Fourteen lively and informative speeches made by Alistair Cooke, host of Public Television's Masterpiece Theater and the voice of the BBC's Letter From America. The title comes from the annual Convocation Address he delivered at the Mayo Clinic on the topic of medicine from the nonprofessional's point of view. That speech led to invitations to speak before attorneys, architects, the US Congress, the military and academicians. Cooke's favorite speeches are collected here; 8vo .
