About This Item

Colour illustrated dust jacket. Very slight rubbing to the base edge of the boards, traces of foxing to the top edge of the text block. Patchwork and appliqué -- 2 ways of creating unique items from scraps of fabric -- fascinated a great-grandmothers and filled their leisure hours. At least that's according to the dustwrapper blurb. My understanding from having spoken with people who grew up without electricity, and who were often confined to the house or Homestead due to the weather, with little to entertain, and with no money, was that patchwork and appliqué could be used to repair and extend the life of garments, disguising repairs and extensions, and when the garments had reached the end of their useful life, if there were still usable fabric, the fabric was redrafted into a new item. Nevertheless the book is useful for showing the variety of items that were made. Nowadays however the craftsperson does not use materials at home, but goes to a specialist shop to buy designer fabrics. Size: 4to 9¾" - 12" tall. 153 pages. Please refer to accompanying picture (s).
