About This Item

This First Edition copy of Pascal Cucaro by Robert E. Hopkins, M. F. A. was published in 1969 by Sentinel Art Books of New York and lithographed in the United States by Parish Press, Inc. The book, which measures approximately 6 x 9 inches, is soft bound in stiff paper illustrated covers and contains 64 pages. The book is accompanied by a six-page folded brochure, titled Pascal Cucaro, produced by the Cory Galleries of San Francisco, that measures approximately 5.5 x 8.5 inches. Both the book and the brochure present illustrations of Cucaro's works, a list of museums where his works are displayed, and text discussing his life and artistic accomplishments. Both the book and the brochure are in as new condition.

The illustrations accompanying this description show:

  • The front cover of the book (with its cut-out to show the artist's self-portrait on the following page)

  • A 2-page spread of the title page and frontispiece

  • Two 2-page spreads of B&W and Colored art works

  • Three pages of the unfolded 6-page brochure

Pascal Cucaro was an American painter known for his depictions of circus scenes and landscapes. Born on November 6, 1915 in Youngstown, OH, he became interested in art during his time in the U.S. Army. After leaving the armed forces, Cucaro moved to San Francisco to study at the California School of Fine Arts from 1948 to 1952. His association with the local counter culture led him to the circles of Beat-era artists, writers, and philosophers. In 1965, his paintings would garner him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He was later touted by San Francisco's Chamber of Commerce, for "enhancing the prestige of San Francisco and the Bay Area as a major world culture center through his creative energy and work." The artist died in January 2004 in Sausalito, CA. [Artnet]
