The first edition of this work.In a signed binding by Birdsall.'Partial Portraits' is a collection of literary criticism essays, including the important essays 'The Art of Fiction'.Written by Henry James, the noted American author who is best known for his works 'The Portrait of a Lady' and 'The Turn of the Screw'. In a half vellum binding with paper to the boards, a signed binding by Birdsall. Externally, smart. A little discolouration and a few light marks to the vellum. A couple of light marks to the boards. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some spots, mostly and heavier to the first and last few pages. Very Good

Synopsis

Partial Portraits is a book of literary criticism by Henry James published in 1888. The book collected essays that James had written over the preceding decade, mostly on English and American writers. But the book also offered interesting treatments of Alphonse Daudet, Guy de Maupassant and Ivan Turgenev. Perhaps the most important essay was The Art of Fiction, James' brilliant plea for the widest possible freedom in content and technique in narrative fiction.
