About This Item
MISSING ORIGINAL MAPS.INCLUDED MAPS ARE FACSIMILES
Frontispiece fold-out map, missing in most copies. Foxing throughout. Title continues: "Under the Direction of the A. B. C. F. M. Performed in the Years 1835, '36, and '37; Containing a Description of the Geography, Geology, Climate, and Productions; and the Number, Manners, and Customs of the Natives. With a Map of Oregon Territory." Rev. Samuel Parker accompanied the American Fur Company's exploring party of 1835 from Council Bluffs to Walla Walla, scouting for locations for Presbyterian missions. Parker returned to New York and informed his mission board of the best sites for missions but was then rejected for missionary work due to his advanced age. Instead, he published this book about his journey. The map in this volume is the earliest to illustrate the interior of Oregion with any accuracy. Contains a vocabulary of the Nez Perce, Chenook, and other languages.
