A first edition work of military history, offering Simpson's reflections following the Battle of Waterloo, with two colour maps to rear of text. First Edition, uncommon. Bound by John Gray. Illustrated with two colour maps to the rear of text.This is a historical memoir by James Simpson, in which the author reflects on the state of France following the Battle of Waterloo. This work includes 'notes taken at the time and hitherto unpublished', following the success of his other memoir, 'A Visit to Flanders and the Field of Waterloo'. This memoir was also inspired from his visitation to Waterloo in 1815, immediately following the battle.Content headings include 'Antwerp', 'Brussels', 'Visit to the Field', 'Reflections', and 'Louvre Gallery'. James Simpson (1781-1853) was a Scottish advocate and author. In his early life he was acquainted with Sir Walter Scott, and was able to read 'Waverley' before its publication. Six pages of publisher's adverts to rear. Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Some marks and discolouration to boards, with fading to spine. Minor edge wear to extremities, with a bit of bumping to head and tail of spine. Bookbinder's label to rear pastedown. Light spotting to endpapers. Prior owner's pencil inscription to front end paper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright throughout, with light spotting particularly to the first and last few pages. Very Good
