Coloniae Agrippinae: Janssonii Waesbergii, 1732. Hardcover. See Description. 8vo. pp. [32], 680, [4], 93, [1]. With extra illustrated title page and 8 emblematic engravings by A. Schoonebeck (a student of Romeyn de Hooghe). The illustrated title displays a series of images depicting Paradise and the fall of man. The main title is printed in red and black and contains a woodcut device with a Jesuit Christogram. Bound in full modern dark brown bonded leather with a French groove. The interior pages are generally clean and crisp and the plates are well executed with a sharp impression. The illustrated title and the main title are mildly age-toned; a tiny chip on the upper margin of the illustrated title is neatly patched. Two leaves (S6-7) contain an area of chipping on the bottom margin edge (probably a manufacturing flaw). This is the 1732 edition of Jacob Merlo Horstiuss hugely popular devotional book (first printed in 1630; and with Schoonebecks engravings 1683?). Horstiuss "Paradisus" is divided into 7 sections 1.) on the worship of the Trinity 2.) on the veneration of saints 3.) on sin and penance 4.) on the spiritual and religious life 5.) on Holy Communion and the Mass 6.) on the life and death of Christ 7.) on the veneration of the Virgin, the remembrance of death, and the preparation for a happy death (praeparatione bene beateque moriendi). Each section includes various meditations, exercises, instructions, prayers and orations. Horstiuss "Manuale pietas" (with separate pagination) is also included at the end of the book. The content of this last work relates to the seven penitential psalms and also offers orations in times of war and calamity. [ADB XXI, p.447].

Description:
Bruxelles: Johannis Mommartius, 1656 A good copy of the second edition of this extremely rare work. First printed in Venice in 1652. Baldassare Bonifacio was a professor among many other talents and this work is a cabinet of curiosities - gathering a wide range of stories and recollections - including tales from classical antiquity of women who had serpent lovers. In full leather binding with raised bands and gilt decoration to the spine and tooling to the boards. It has had an old leather repair relaying the tooled front board onto plain leather. It is clean, showing wear to top and bottom of spine and edges and with a broken front hinge and weak rear hinge, although the board is still attached. The contents are in superb condition given the age of the book. There is a biographical note written in ink in english on a preliminary and 2-3 signs of previous ownershiip. Some of the ink has run a little. With black and white illustrated title page; page of names - D Carolo Hovyne, Equiti Aurato;…

Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1788. Hardcover. 8vo. Full vellum. (Ca. 300pp). Sewn-in green silk page marker. Very good. Rather crude binding pleasingly aged, yellowed and irregular, but without the bowing often evident on full vellum bindings. Intriguingly cryptic late 18th century handwritten copy of what appears to be a hairy theological text by the Spanish cleric, Jesuit and author (1562-1655) known in Latin as Luisii Turriani, first published in Madrid in 1630. Handsomely and boldly penned entirely in Latin in rich brown ink on attractive laid paper of the period, with a great many headings and subheadings. Our Latin is limited to "e pluribus unum," "sic semper tyrannis" and similar commonplace phrases, but our guess is that this was the product of a seminary student or other academic as a Latin exercise. "Tuccillo" is penned below the year on the title page as if produced in that city, but our research fails to produce a city by that name. Tight, clean and quite handleable.

1664 RARE 1st ed John Barclay Satyricon Gunpowder Plot Jesuit Satire MorisotJohn Barclay was an early 17th-century Scottish poet and author remembered for works such as 'Argenis' and 'Satyricon'. Many of Barclay's works were satirical in nature, most notably 'Satyricon', which was written over the course of ten years at the start of the 17th-century. The last two parts were given separate titles and were not written as part of the original 'Satyricon'; however, they are now considered to be part of the work.
·
'Satyricon' – "a comic novel" (Fleming); a severe satire on Jesuits, medical doctors, education, and literature
·
'Apologia Euphomionis pro se' – a response to Jesuit attacks
·
'Icon Animorum' – a description of the character and mannerisms of various European nations and cultures
o "A masterly description of the manners of several nations of Europe in the beginning of the 18th-century, with remarks moral and philosophical on the various tempers of men." (Lowndes)… Read More

Limited to 200 copies, this one unnumbered; Essentailly a copy of Singam's scrapbook of images and letters related to Coomaraswamy; 10" x 7.25" paperback; 255 pages. "What might a man want to do after he has spent years working on Coomaraswamy — biography, bibliography, letters, tributes - or how does he answer a friend's question, 'What are you working on now?' The answer to this question is this book — the title of which is a question my four-year-old grandson, Chandra Mohan, often puts to me whilst I am doing some piece of Coomaraswamy writing. I play him the Coomaraswamy tape, the Dance of Shiva, but he is not satisfied. But when I show him several pictures from my Coomaraswamy Album he is happy, observant and puts me more questions. The portraits interest him, the several pictures of his books he counts and thus a half hour is spent in this manner. The thought…
