London: Harrison and Sons, 1881 British Parliamentary Report[C3057]; bound with Report [C3058] containing "Further Papers " relating to the same. Hard cover, folio (measuring 8 ¼ x 13 inches), in brown cloth boards with title in gilt, 29pp. and 115 pp. plus foldout map. In English, Spanish and French. SIGNED in pencil on ffep.: "Lewis Baker , Bluefields, May 8th 1894." Lewis Baker was the Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary, appointed by the American President Grover Cleveland to Nicaragua, Costa Rica and El Salvador, serving from May 13, 1893 to December 9, 1897. As such, he reported his observations on the "negro insurrection" at the Caribbean port city of Bluefields to the State Department in a series of letters, now accessible at the Foreign Relations website of the State Department. The 1860 Treaty of Managua, established the "Mosquito Coast" as an autonomous region from the former British colony of Nicaragua, thereby maintaining British trade access to the lucrative port of Bluefield. Condition: Good+. Both boards, as well as the spine, are sunned. Tear at head of spine. Minor insect damage not affecting text. Wear to corners. Pages age-toned.. Signed by Lewis Baker, Minister Plenipotentiary. Hard Cover. Good+.
