Modena, Italy: Franco Cosimo Panini, (1998). Two volumes, first editions. Small folios (12.5" x 9.75"), 512 pages (text & architectural elevations & plans); 699 pages (plates "Atlas"). Publisher's gilt-lettered & decorated black linen in thick plain plastic dust jackets housed in a gilt-lettered & color illustrated slipcase. Text in Italian & English.
Text block on the plate volume beginning to slip at the top of the spine (still secure), slight shelf wear, trace of soiling, otherwise near fine. Slipcase lightly soiled, production flaw causing slight creasing at the rear panel which also has a & tiny snag, otherwise better than very good.
Volume 8 of the Mirabilia Italiae series.
An elaborate production, profusely illustrated often in color & including folding plates. Additionally, the definitive treatise on the Palazzo del Te, the masterpiece of architect Giulio Romano. The "Palace of leisure" was built over a ten year period beginning in 1524 for Federico II Gonzaga, Marquess of Mantua.
