About This Item
New York: Macmillan, 1949. First Edition. Signed and inscribed by the author, John Alton to Conrad Prag Kahn, the great sound recorder for many Hollywood films produced from the 30’s through the 60’s, inscribed: “Every once in a while one meets a real human being who is also an artist, a thinker, a creator. This one happens to be my good friend Conrad Kahn. Good Luck Conny!, John. Hollywood, 1956.” Laid in are two interesting items. One is a 9” x 6” page from a sketchbook with an original charcoal sketch by John Alton of Conrad Kahn in profile wearing headphones, inscribed: “To the Great Khan. John Alton. Hollywood 1956.” The other item is an original black and white photograph, 5” x 3”, taken on the set of a film showing Mr. Kahn sitting wearing headphones operating his sound equipment. Conrad Kahn was in charge of sound for so many classic films, including The Wizard of Oz, Ninotchka with Greta Garbo, Frank Capra’s State of the Union, Preston Sturges’ Fort Bravo, Teahouse of the August Moon, as well as many of the Katharine Hepburn-Spencer Tracy films, William Powell-Myrna Loy pictures, several Fred Astaire films, and many others. From its listing in 100 Books on Hollywood & the Movies: “An exceptional book on cinematography, especially the use of film noir lighting, by one of its most adept practitioners, responsible for T-Men and The Big Combo and winner of an Academy Award for An American in Paris” . Corners slightly bumped, else very good plus in a very good plus dust jacket with a couple of tiny chips and tears. A wonderful association copy. Listed in 100 Books on Hollywood & the Movies.
