The Nineteenth Walter Neurath Memorial Lecture. *Considers first the origin of the art book in seventeenth-century Rome and examines the published practices established by the enterprising De' Rossi family. By the 1720s a new departure in publishing took place in Paris where a remarkable, if not wholly successful, attempt was made by a combination of bankers, collectors and art historians to produce the first book of plates with commentaries: an illustrated catalogue of the best paintings and drawings to be found in the principal European galleries' [wrapper blurb].
