About This Item
UK,slim Qrto HB+dw/dj,1st edn.NFINE/NFINE.Previous owner's ink name to top corner of ffe,and a price-clip to dw/dj.Bright, crisp, clean, glossy laminated, postcard's tinted colour illustrated dw/dj with b/w letters; with negligible shelf-wear and creasing to edges and corners - no major nicks or tears present.Partial, slight water stain to top+ bottom internal edges of dw/dj - boards benaeth unaffected though.Top+fore-edges inevitably aged/toned - as usual/normal; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips - possibly unread? Publisher's bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered,original,grey mottled cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt letters to spine/backstrip and immaculate b/w line illustrated endpapers (a longtitudinal section of a paddle steamer).UK,slim Qrto HB+dw/dj,1st edn,8-136pp [paginated] includes 8 chapters, profuse b/w contemporary photographs throughout the text and the book,a bibliography and an index.Plus [unpaginated] b/w photographic frntis,title-page,a contents list/table, acknowledgements and author introduction.
Here is a complete visual guide to all the major types of paddle steamers which sailed from British and Irish ports and inland waterways in the years before the First World War.Not only is it a visual account,it is also a factual one backed by detailed introductions to each of the 8 chapters and by scholarly annotations to the 122 illustrations from Victorian and Edwardian photographs.
The earliest application of steam power to ships resulted in the construction of tugs,so it is natural that the first chapter should be on this theme. In succeeding sections Richard Clammer deals with River and Lake Steamers, Ferries,Ocean-going Paddle Steamers,Warships,Royal Yachts,Cross-Channel Paddle Steamers, and Pleasure Steamers. Finally,an extended bibliography suggests the sources for further information.
Two facts indicate something of the book's quality. The first is that only a tiny proportion of the photographs has previously been published: in this respect the work is a truly original one. The second is implied by a note of Acknowledgement in which the author records his thanks to the 50 and more firms, institutions and individuals who have answered his enquiries and who have given the book its undoubted authority.
