Publisher: Boston: Estes and Lauriat, 1882. (8" x 5.75"), pictorial gilt and black- stamped brown cloth, with author's signature in gilt to the lower cover. [8], 148 pp., [2] publ. ads in rear., 63 b&w illus., folded map printed in blue (with two vignettes) in pocket at rear, 21" x 30". First edition, first printing. One of Steele's two classic accounts of canoe expeditions through the Maine wilderness, the other title being 'Canoe and Camera'. About fine in lovely condition with just tiny signs of ownership. Attractive moose on forrested pond Owner bookplate inside front cover (Nathaniel Cushing Nash) and his printed name (N.C.Nash) on opposite end paper in, looks like, pencil. Bruns S-276.BOOKPLATE OWNER: Nathaniel C. Nash, Jr., was educated at Noble & Greenough School, Harvard University (1907), and Harvard Law School (LL.B., 1911). He practiced law in Boston, Massachusetts, and served in the Ordnance Department of the Massachusetts National Guard, achieving the rank of Lt. Colonel in 1930. He served as President of the National Rifle Association from 1941 to 1942. He was the son of Nathaniel Cushing NASH and Nellie Munro FESSENDEN, and he was the husband of Mary Evelyn HOWE.
