Peterborough, New Hampshire: A. P. Morrison & Sons, 1861. Ledger. Good. Lot 3 Account ledgers. Hardcovers. The first ledger measures approx. 7.25" x 6". Brownish marbled paper covered boards with leather spine. The boards are edge and shelf worn. Contents are clean. Dates recorded range from 1842-1860. 74 pages were used to record the sale of books and paper, items purchased, accounts due, 'Cash Notes', 'Bills to Collect', 'Boston accounts', etc. Dozens of names are recorded. Several blank pages in this ledger. Written on the right front flyleaf - "Memorandum & Commissor (sp.?) Book 1842." The second ledger measures approx. 8" x 6". Brownish marbled paper covered boards with brown leather spine. Edge and shelf wear to the boards. Contents inside are clean. A few pages of records are lightly faded. Dates range from 1858-1862. 116 pages used to record cash paid for goods, and dozens of pages with named accounts. On the right front flyleaf is the inscription "Morrison, Cheney & Co. Cash Book Feb. 8, 1859." The third ledger measures approx. 8" x 7". Brownish marbled paper covered boards with brown leather spine. Dates range from 1858-1870. 58 pages used. Several unused pages. Light shelf and edge wear to the boards. Interior contents are clean. Items recorded include several pages of straw and wood sales to various customers and several pages of "Stock of A. P. M. & Sons October 1st, 1870" written in pencil. Inscription on the right front flyleaf reads - "Straw Book A. P. Morrison & Co. April 1, 1858." "He (P.C. Cheney) was born in Holderness (now Ashland) February 25, 1828. In 1835 his father, one of the pioneers in the paper-making industry of New Hampshire, sold his mill in Holderness and moved to Peterborough, where he, in company with the late A.P. Morrison, his brother-in-law, purchased a small mill. In this mill, in the schools of Peterborough, in Hancock Academy and in Parsonfield (Me) Seminary (then taught by his oldest brother) he received the education and training which have enabled him to reach the prominent positions he has occupied in business, political and social life." P. C. Cheney was the son of Moses Cheney. From wikipedia: "Moses Cheney (January 31, 1793 - July 17, 1875) was an abolitionist, printer and legislator from New Hampshire. Cheney was born in 1793 in Thornton, New Hampshire. Cheney entered the paper printing business in a region of nearby Holderness which was later renamed Ashland. On June 23, 1816 he married Abigail (Morrison) Cheney (b. 1796). Moses Cheney served as a conductor on the Underground Railroad at his home in Peterborough where he hosted Frederick Douglass on several occasions. Cheney was also the original printer of The Morning Star, an abolitionist Freewill Baptist newspaper. Cheney's son Oren Cheney was the founder and first president of Bates College in Maine, and Moses' son Person Cheney served as a U.S. Senator and Governor of New Hampshire. Moses Cheney died on July 17, 1875, and was buried in Ashland.[1]

Records from "New Hampshire As it Is, In Three Parts" by Edwin Charlton indicates in 1856 A. P. Morrison had a Paper Mill in Petersborough. Little other information was readily found on the internet regarding A. P. Morrison & Sons.
