Important & influential study of the idea of 'civilization', based in part on theories from the European Enlightenment, in which Fukuzawa, revered as one of the founders of 'modern' Japan, urged his country to realign its values in that direction. First edition in English, with an introductory preface by Japanese historian Tsuda Sokichi; originally published in 1875. Hardcover in jacket, as pictured. Light wear to book; corners bumped, one dent to lower rear board; price-clipped (both corners) jacket lightly rubbed with minor creasing & tiny tear. Text clean; xxiii, blank, 205 pages; index, brief bibliography. . First Edition in English. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 7" by 10½".
