About This Item

Edinburgh : Printed for William Creech; and T Cadell, Jun. and W Davies, 1798 A good copy in full leather binding with folding map of the Shetland Islands, map of Arran and one further plate. This was the first serious geological study of Shetland and Arran. Robert Jameson (1774-1854) went on to study under Werner and to hold the post of Regius Professor of Natural History at the University of Edinburgh (for 50 years). This book has contemporary boards and a newer spine with red title label. The boards have some scuffing and there is a lot of wear to corners with some leather loss. The endpapers have been retained with tape at the joints and a leaf has been added at the rear by the binder with a pencil note giving their address and the cost of their repair work. The contents are complete and clean and consist of: folding map of Shetland Isles (taped in as the frontispiece); title page; dedication to Dr Walker 1p; Advert and Errata 1p; introduction and contents list i-xiv; text on Shetland pp 1-48; map of Arran; text 49-144 with 1 plate (2 illustrations); Appendix pp 147-202; Finis. There are some notes from Edinburgh Subscription Library dated 1811 and an old ownership signature from 1961 at the front pastedown. The paper is lightly toned and there is some offsetting from the maps and plate. There are a few tiny burn spots pp 16-23 and there is the occasional mark or stain. From page 50-56 (even pages only), the text header should read Arran, but is misprinted 'Shetland'. A previous owner has tried to correct this but gave up at p 54. Page 169 has a slightly ragged bottom edge. There is very small repaired margin edge tear in the Shetland map. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images. Board size: 23.9 cm x 14.8 cm

About E C Books

E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Our largest stock area is Natural History, where we have a good range of books from the 1700-1800's, many finely illustrated. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
