Thumb-marking present. Noticeable creasing to gutter. Front and rear boards are loose but still attached. Boards have heavy edge-wear with bumping to corners, crushing to spine ends and rub wear all over. Notable sunning to spine and edges. White marks and scratches to boards. Textblock is shaky.

Tight and decent first edition of this commentary on the contemporary worldwide political situation by the National Book Award-winning American journalist (1896-1970). Personal copy of Illinois governor and two-time Democratic presidential candidate Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65), with his rubberstamped ownership signature at top of half-title page, and below this a bold author inscription and signature: "To Adlai Stevenson / with good wishes. / Louis Fischer / March '56" in blue ballpoint. Stevenson himself is mentioned on several pages.
