Boston & New York: Houghhton Mifflin Company, The Riverside Press Cambridge, November 1901. Hardcover. Sm. 8vo (8.25" x 5.5"), gilt green cloth. t.e.g. Frontis., [8], 382 pp., 10 b&w plates. Some leaves uncut. Gift inscription in ink on ffep reading "To Emma Morhard[?]. In grateful recollections of many acts of friendship and affection. From her friend, R. Howard Haman[?]. December 25th 1913." CONDITION: Good, spine lightly sunned, wear at head and foot of spine, bookseller's ticket of "Bertrand Smith's Acres of Books, Cincinnati" on front pastedown, some marginal tears to leaves. Early reprint, bearing the statement "Published November 1901" on the copyright page, but collation corresponds to that of the "extended edition" published in 1909 (BAL 14760), but not the collation for the first edition (BAL 14752). Contains Muir's only account of his interaction with Ralph Waldo Emerson to visit the "Mariposa big trees.
