Volume VI of The Manuscript edition of "The Writings of John Muir" published in 10 volumes. 8vo; [xiv]; 399; [1] pp. 32 captioned photographic plates, including frontispiece portrait of Mount Hoffman after photographs by Herbert W. Gleason. Map and Tables by Allen Chamberlain. Index to Map; General Index. A near fine copy (joints are tender; old restoration to spine head; light wear to corners). "In this book, made up of sketches first published in the Atlantic Monthly, I have done the best I could to show forth the beauty, grandeur, and all-embracing usefulness of our wild mountian forest reservations and parks, with a view to inciting the poeple to come and enjoy them, and get them into their hearts, that so at length their preservation and right use might be made sure." -- Author's description. "Our National Parks" is composed of ten articles previously published in The Atlantic Monthy celebrating the parklands of the American West. Muir captures the vital essence of Yosemite, Yellowstone, Sequoia, and other areas, detailing their natural attractions -- the breathtaking forests, lush alpine meadows, massive granite domes, towering sequoias, bursting geysers, thundering waterfalls, and crystalline glacial lakes. (Kimes 237).
