About This Item

UK: Bullfinch Publications, 1989. Soft cover. Very Good. 21.6 x 15.4 x 1.4 cm. p/b 175 pages, condition is very good. In 1772, at the age of 15, David Baird left his Edinburgh home to start his military career as an ensign in the British Army. Eight years later, severely wounded, he was languishing in an Indian goal with other survivors of a detachment of British and sepoys that had been utterly defeated by the Army of Hyder Ali of Mysore. Released after nearly four years, few of his fellow prisoners saw active service again. Yet Baird was to spend 25 more adventurous years in the Service. OUR DAVY tells the story of those years in episodes each developing to its climax followed by the seemingly to its climax followed by the seeming inevitable anticlimax: his storming and capture of the fortified city where he had been held captive; his epic crossing of theArabian Desert with 7,000 men; his capture and Governorship of the Cape of Good Hope; and finally, the retreat to Corunna with the ensuing Battle when his left arm was shattered by a volley of grapeshot.
