London: Printed for C D Piguenit, No. 8, Aldgate, 1793. 1st edition, small format (12.2 x 7.3cm), old plain boards covered in worn, natural beige coarse-weave cloth. 142pp + 2pp publisher's advertisement. A scarce, late-18th century school book, with the owner's name of Thomas Henly and date 1795 inscribed in ink, and also hand-stamped in inked letters. Thomas Henly (1781-1849) was born and bred in Lyneham, Wiltshire and lived with his family at Preston East Farm, and was certainly not universally liked as shown in an extract from a poem by an unknown author: "There is stiff Tommy Henly, rides to hunting so grand/On a fine prancing nag with a whip in his hand/With shining boots on and full to his shirt/And makes the poor tradesman pay for his work." [Further family history details available]. Good copy for its age.

Description:
Leather bound four volume set as pictured. Gils Blas recounts the education and swashbuckling adventures of an adaptable young valet as he progresses from one master to the next, making his way from naive youth to cunning servant to landed proprietor and nobleman--with a stint in jail, bereavements, and fits of remorse along the way. Finally, our hero learns compassion and achieves tranquillity in a life in the country. This edition was published in 1750. A penciled note in volume 1 states that this was the first edition of the translation by Smollett. All four books have the gilt seal of Groton School embossed on the front board. Bindings are firm in all. Leather boards are very worn and scuffed. Front boards are detached in volumes 1 and 2 and quite loose in volumes 3 and 4. Spines with raised bands and gold stamping are dry and crumbling. Endpapers are tanned. Text is tanned but very readable. A few pages have pencil notations. Description:
The Spectator was a two or three page paper written by Addison and Steele that was published from 1711-1712 in London, England. Eight bound volumes of The Spectator were published in later runs, each volume containing about 200 daily editions.Boards are rubbed, scuffed and soiled and most of the gilt spine titles and red band backgrounds have faded. Corners are bumped. Volume two's rear board and volume eight's front board have seperated from the spine but have a very clean break and could be reattached with some basic rebinding. Raised spine ribs. Endpapers and title pages show minor browning with age, but all other pages are clean and bright for their age. Indexes at the rear of the texts.
