First issued in 1885, this work offers the earliest study of the early history of ancient and medieval alchemy, with special attention to Egypt. Pierre Eugene Marcellin Berthelot, FRS FRSE, was a French chemist and politician noted for the Thomsen–Berthelot principle of thermochemistry. Maureen Ogle describes the author as "one of the most famous chemists in the world."
