About This Item

N.p: tavoularis designed, 1989. Original ‘Tavo Lamp’ full-size table lamp technical design by artist and craftsman Dean Tavoularis, production designer and wine label artist for filmmaker and winery owner Francis Ford Coppola. With “tavoularis DESIGN COPYRIGHTED” at the lower right corner. Dated January 10, 1989, single sheet, 19 1/2” by 33 1/2”, slightly age-toned off-white paper. Near fine with some minor creases from folding and some very slight handling. Although born in Lowell, Massachusetts, to Greek immigrant parents, Tavoularis spent his entire childhood and teenage years in Los Angeles, in the shade of the Hollywood studios. He studied architecture and painting at different art schools and landed a job at the Disney Studios first as an 'in-betweener’ in the animation department, and later as a storyboard artist. In 1972 he began his collaboration as a production designer with Francis Ford Coppola on his film The Godfather, followed by The Godfather Part II - for which he won an Oscar, The Conversation, Apocalypse Now, One From the Heart, Rumble Fish, Peggy Sue Got Married, Tucker: The Man and His Dream, The Godfather Part III, and more. As of 2020, he has contributed with the production design of five films that were nominated for the Best Picture Oscar: The Godfather (1972), The Conversation (1974), The Godfather: Part II (1974), Apocalypse Now (1979) and The Godfather: Part III (1990). The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather: Part II (1974) are winners in the category. As an art director, he contributed with the nominated Bonnie and Clyde (1967). The extensive list of directors with whom he has worked includes Michelangelo Antonioni (Zabriskie Point, 1970), Wim Wenders (Hammett, 1982), Warren Beatty (Bulworth, 1998) and Roman Polanski (The Ninth Gate, 1999). In 2007 he won the Art Directors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award. His collaboration with Francis Ford Coppola also includes creating the labels of Francis Coppola Reserve wines, the courtyard and fountain of Inglenook in Napa Valley and the interiors and exteriors of Francis Ford Coppola Winery in Sonoma County.
