Black coloured boards with yellow writing on the spine. Bumping and rubbing to the head and to the heel of the back strip. Rubbing to the book corners and light browning to the text block edges. The major fault with the book is that there has been a gift inscription to the title page. Illustrated dust wrapper, by Andrew Davidson with white writing on the front panel and spine. Rubbing and chipping to the dust wrapper corners. Rubbing and chipping to the top back strip edge. The laminate of the dust wrapper has become a little scuffed and marked. In this novel Adam Dalgliesh has to unravel the mystery of the death of the unpopular publishing figure Gerard Etienne ( with no lack of suspects ). This is the first UK edition. Synopsis

P. D. James is the author of twenty-one books, most of which have been filmed for television. She spent thirty years in various departments of the British Civil Service, including the Police and Criminal Law Departments of Great Britain's Home Office. She has served as a magistrate and as a governor of the BBC. The recipient of many prizes and honours, she was created Baroness James of Holland Park in 1991 and was inducted into the International Crime  Writing Hall of Fame in 2008.
