About This Item
N.p.: N.p., 1920. Vintage borderless double weight linen-backed portrait photograph of actress Pola Negri, circa 1920s.
Born in present-day Lipno, Poland, Negri made her initial film appearances in Poland and Germany in the 1910s, most notably with Ernst Lubitsch in "The Eyes of the Mummy Ma" and "Carmen" (1918), "Madame DuBerry" (1919), "One Arabian Night" (1920), "The Wildcat" (1921), and "The Flame" (1922). Her success with Lubitsch introduced Negri to American audiences, and she signed with Paramount in 1922, making her one of the first continental film stars to be imported into Hollywood. Negri was wildly successful in 1920s Hollywood, made moreso by her notorious romances with leading film actors Charlie Chaplin and Rudolph Valentino. Scandals in the US and declining popularity due to sound film precipitated Negri's return to Europe, which bankrupted the actress and forced her re-return to the US, where she eventually retired in 1964.
7.25 x 9.5 inches. Very Good plus, with light toning.
