About This Item
Culver City, CA, February 10, 1939. Original Mimeographed Letter Signed between Loew’s Inc. and Selznick International Pictures, Inc. regarding actor Clark Gable. Single sheet, 8 3/8” x 11” on printed Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer stationery. The body of the letter reads in full: “Gentlemen, This will confirm our understanding and agreement that the term of our agreement with you dated August 25, 1938 (relating to the services of Clark Gable in the photoplay GONE WITH THE WIND) shall, notwithstanding the provisions of paragraph 1 of said agreement, be deemed to have commenced on January 12, 1939. Except as hereinabove expressly provided, said agreement dated August 25, 1938, is not changed, altered, amended or affected in any manner or particular whatsoever. If the foregoing is in accordance with your understanding and agreement, kindly indicate your approval and acceptance thereof in the space hereinbelow provided.” The letter is signed by Loew’s Inc. assistant secretary and by Selzick executive Daniel O’Shea. Punch holes at the top edge and minor creases from folding, else fine. Gone with the Wind was produced by David O. Selznick, directed by Victor Fleming, and stars Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard, and Olivia de Havilland. It premiered in Atlanta, GA on December 15, 1939 and was distributed by Loew’s.
