ORIGINAL ETCHING WITH AQUATINT [THE TOWN MOUSE AND THE COUNTRY MOUSE]
by Charara, Adnan
- Used
[ N.p.: The Artist, 1993. Aquatint etching on Somerset England handmade paper. "Charara Studio" embossed on lower left of paper. Hand-colored in jewel tones. Image 3 3/4" x 5 3/4", overall size 11 1/4" x 14 3/4". Signed in plate, and in pencil in lower right margin, numbered at lower left. Archivally mounted, with descriptive text attached to verso of mat. No. 7 from an edition limited to 10, published as part of the suite, VISUAL METAPHORS. The etching features the town mouse proffering the bounty of luxe living to a laid-back country mouse of modest means, the moral here is "A humble life of peace and quiet is better than a splendid one with danger and risk." Adnan Charara is a Detroit- based Lebanese-American, born in Lebanon, but principally raised in Sierra Leone, West Africa. This series of etchings evoke an Aesop fable, transmogrified onto a human plane yet maintaining the essence of the fable. As a child, Adnan Charara was taught fables in a Lebanese boarding school a half hour everyday. He returned to these stories, with their moral lessons and pieces of advice, as a vehicle to explore his curiosity about the human personality.

Paris: Imp. Lemercier [for:] Librairie Nouvelle, [nd. but ca. 1850s].. 19 plates and 18 plates. Loose sheets. Images, including captions, ca. 27 x 18.5 cm. Margins vary. Some creasing to the larger margins, two plates exhibit foxing and a couple more show some slight marginal tanning, otherwise very good or better. Decent representation of two of the sub- elements of Gavarni's extended work, which when completed, included 329 lithographic plates. The first element lacks plate 1 of the twenty published, and the second lacks plates 4 and 5 of twenty published (duplicates of 2 and 7 are also present, but not included in the count above). Ray treats the series at some length, describing Thomas Virelogue as "one of Gavarni's most brilliant inspirations," and the work as a whole as "a neglected masterpiece of nineteenth-century French graphic art." Stuttgart Verlag v. Krais & Hoffmann, Stuttgart, 1868; Large hand colored copper engraving of Mecynorhina torquata Drury and Acrocinus longimanus, together with sixteen other species of beetle. Contrary to its ferocious appearance, Mecynorhina is actually a pollen eater, native to tropical Africa, and among the largest of the world’s flower beetles, attaining a body length of more than 3". The South American Acrocinus or "Harlequin Beetle" depicted at right is of equivalent body size, but with long articulated forelegs that add an additional 6" to its overall length. Engraved identification key in the lower margin lists the Latin binomial and German common name for all beetles shown. An original double plate from C.F.A. Kolb’s Naturgeschichte des Tierreichs, published at Stuttgart in 1868. Hinged and matted entirely acid free, ready for framing. Full sheet size 13 1/4" x 16", matte window 12 3/4" x 14 1/4", outside matte dimensions 18" x 19 1/2".…

- Laran 196. - A great print; likely the best from the album, and certainly a major print within his entire engraved work (436 prints). Apart that this print shows very well the artist's skills as an etcher, there's something else and unusual. Normally the weather does not play an important role in Béjot's etchings, mostly urban landscapes/scenes, while here the weather is very much pronounced. Therefore the print can be seen as a salute/tribute to a colleague printmaker, Félix Buhot, a friend, somewhat older than Béjot, who had died April 1898, and who was…
