About This Item
NY: Caxton House. Very Good- with no Dust Jacket. Later Printing. Hardcover. His description of a two-month sojourn beyond the American "frontiers" is an important historical text, painting a fascinating picture of a nation on the cusp of enormous, fundamental change. In 1846, Francis Parkman Jr. , set out on a journey. He was not the first to make this journey, and he would not be the last. In fact, he didn't complete the journey at all but his two months spent covering the Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, and Kansas portions of the iconic Oregon Trail migration route provided sufficient inspiration for a series of magazine articles and, subsequently, a book. The author died in 1893. Theodore Roosevelt dedicated his four-volume history of the frontier, The Winning of the West (18891896) , to Parkman. Parkman wrote The Oregon Trail during his 18461848 convalescence from illness. There is no date, but it is definitely old. There are small tears to the cloth, front, back and spine. No title on boards or spine. The Society for American Historians annually awards the Francis Parkman Prize for the best book on American history. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 282 pages; 33429 .
