About This Item
New York:: Morrow,, 1939.. Hardcover -. Very near fine in dark blue cloth with gilt lettering, dark blue tinting to top edge, in a near fine dust jacket (minor edgewear to dj.) Laid in is the 4 pp BOMC brochure with review of book by Christopher Morley and a bookstore account postcard from Paul Elder's Books in San Francisco. . Book of the Month Club edition (same size and quality as trade edition, but with no price on the dust jacket). A prophetic novel , originally titled What Happened to the Corbetts. and written before World War II broke out in 1939, and before German bombs fell on London and England's south, but partly as a protest against the preparations being made by the English authorities (they were focusing on possibly gas attacks, rather than on the more mundane but likely effects of loss of phones, gas, electricity, water and other services modern life has come to depend upon.) Described as "not so much a study of war as of the human spirit, of its infinite capacity to endure and to re-shape the world to its destiny." 280 pp plus an author's note.
