About This Item
New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1945. First Edition. First Printing. Octavo (19.5cm); black cloth, with titling and publisher's logo stamped in green on spine and front cover; dustjacket; xii,244pp. A fresh, Fine copy in a Very Good+ dustjacket, price-clipped, gently spine-sunned and lightly edgeworn, with a few tiny nicks and tears. A posthumously published novel, set in the upper artistic strata of New York City. "...this story puts the author among those whose production exceeds one score. We see again the detective work of the middle-aged Amos Lee Mapin, whose skill lies chiefly in facing possible suspects with the inferences he has drawn from clues, times, and motives" (BARZUN & TAYLOR 866). HUBIN, p.151.
