About This Item
Lugd. Batavorum [Leiden] / Amstelodami [Amsterdam]: Jacobum Hackium / Abrahamum Wolfgang,, 1680. 3 vols. 8vo. pp. [ccclxxxiv], 704 + 3 plates (including engraved allegorical title page); [ii], 1124 (small tear to final leaf) + 5 plates; 982 + 6 plates (plates engraved by Gonzales Appelmans). A few numismatic illustrations in the text, occasional trivial spotting. Contemporary calf, minor restoration to joints and headcaps and one lettering piece made good. Ownership signature of barrister Jamineau Cheveley (1731-1796) to each title-page. According to Dibdin, this is the best variorum edition of Virgils works. The text was edited by Jacob Emmens, following the best Elzevir edition of 1676. Dibdin also praises the extremely beautiful typography and elegant vignettes. Dibdin, Introduction to rare and valuable editions, II, 549. Book
