The RARE First Italian edition published in Naples 1753-1763, this being a 12 volume partial set of Hoffman's major works, containing the following: "Medicinae Rationalis Systematique", Tomus Secundus, Tomus Tertius( Section I and II), all published 1753, and Tomus Quarti, (Pars Secunda and Pars Tertius), 1754 ; "Observationum Physico-Chymicarum Selectiorum", Libri III, 1755; "Operum Omnium Physico-Medicorum Supplementum" (by itself a 13 volume set) books 1 (1754), 5 (1757), 8 (1760), 10 (1762), and 13 (1763) ; and "Opuscula Medica Varii Argumenti, Seu Dissertationes", 1756. When Pierre Pomet first published the work in France in 1684, a wealth of discoveries were being made through voyages to tropical regions. This book was the first to look at the new products - whether plant, animal or mineral being made available for european use. It was translated into English in 1712 and became a handbook for apothecaries. Pierre Pomet (1658-1699) had a practice in Paris as well his position as Chief Druggist to Louis XIV. The binding has raised bands with gilt lines to spine and a red title label. It is in fine condition. The pastedown endpapers have been replaced and there is the signature of Sarah Mainwaring to the fep. The title page also has her signature, crossed out, at the top. (Walther Otto Muller), with others by Carl Friedrich Schmidt and K. or E. Gunther. The botanical plates are justly famous for their attractive design, with all parts of the flower, leaf, branch, fruit and seed displayed over the entire plate.This monumental German herbal was written principally by Hermann Adolph Köhler, edited after his death by Gustav Pabst, and published by Franz Eugen Köhler from 1887-1890. The third volume was published later in 1898 with the subtitle Latest medicinal plants and confusions (Neueste Medizinalpflanzen und Verwechslungen), revised by Max Vogtherr and M.
