Francoforti ad Moenum, Impensis Sigismundi Feyerabendt, 1580.. de Antiquitatibus Iudaicis libri XX quibus in fine loco appendicis Vita Iosephi per ipsum conscripta est adiecta: De Bello Iudaico Libri VII ... ; Contra Apionem Libri II ... ; De imperio rationis, sive de Macchabaeis Liber Unus; ... nunc vero summa cum diligentia chronologia ad caput vniuscuiusque folij, cum ex veterum tum recentiorum Scriptorum commentarijs, cumq[ue] scholijs necessarijs, per doctum quendam virum in communem rei literariae utilitatem recens concinnata: cum figuris et indice locupletissimo: omnia quam absolutissime hac editione emendata, et a mendis, quibus scatebant plurimi repurgata. 1580, Latin text, folio, approximately 370 x 240 mm, 14¾ x 9¼ inches, woodcut pictorial title page with at its centre a depiction of the Judgment of Solomon, 1 full page woodcut of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden surrounded by animals, 97 smaller wood cuts in the text (115 x 150 mm, 4½ x 6 inches), many of battle scenes, a few repeated, 2 large woodcut headpieces, a few tailpieces and numerous historiated and decorated initials, pages: (8), 934, (46) - index, the last page with 18 lines of index, colophon and large printer's device is lacking and supplied in modern facsimile on white paper, (according to a binder's note on last pastedown the facsimile was done by the British Library), leaf 6a6 is a blank, rebound in full calf, raised bands to spine and gilt lettered title, new endpapers. A few minor marks to covers, name of a previous owner written neatly on top edges, messy ink inscription on preserved front endpaper, title page slightly dusty, crease to both outer corners, small closed tear to fore-edge margin, name written twice in the margin, single worm hole to fore-edge margin of first 4 leaves, 1 small marginal note, small closed margin tear to 7 leaves, all neatly repaired, pale damp stain to lower margin from page 223-704, very pale damp stain to upper margin from page 755 to the end of the volume, affecting text in places but hardly noticeable, occasional small light stain, a few tiny ink stains not obscuring text. Binding tight and firm. A good sound copy of an illustrated edition, 1 copy only listed in Copac, Lambeth Palace, (final page in facsimile as noted). Latin translation from the Greek by Tyrannius Rufinus, Roman priest and theologian 4th century AD; edited by Czech humanist scholar Sigismundus Gelenius except for De Machabaeis which is edited by Erasmus. Twenty-four of the wood cuts are by the German engraver Jost Amman (ca.1539-1591) including the full page illustration; others are signed: S.F. and S.H.F.
