About This Item

New York: Grinnell Litho Co, 1917. unbound. WWI Poster. Lithograph. 28" x 42".

The YMCA has provided social services for American troops since before the Civil War. During World World I, the YMCA employed women as canteen workers who would be stationed near the war front to serve refreshments and hand out books to soldiers. This poster features one of those workers. She is framed by the YMCA emblem printed in brilliant red and bright blue. Some tears and crumpling of the border, long tear repair in her coat, small piece of lower right border missing. Colors are vibrant.

Neysa McMein (1888-1949) was an American artist best known for her posters and numerous magazine covers featuring women, including the first image of the character Betty Crocker. She lived above Carnegie Hall in New York City where she threw legendary parties.
