About This Item

New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1988. First edition. Hardbound. New/New. 225pp. Octavo [21.5 cm] 1/4 black cloth with red paper covered boards, and a gilt stamped title on the spine. Edward Abbey was offered an award by the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1987. He declined the offer, so that he might run a river in Idaho the same week. Wendell Berry states on the jacket- "We are living... among punishments and ruins. For those who know this, Edward Abbey's books remain an indispensable solace. His essays, and his novels, too, are 'antidotes to despair.'
