About This Item

London: David and Charles, 1979. 319pp., green cloth boards, 48 b/w plates.Book has negligible shelf wear. Pictorial d/jacket, minor scuffing only. For centuries, there was no bridge over the Thames, between London Bridge and Kingston. Various attempts to build frustrated either by the City, jealous of it's privileges and commercial monopolies, or by the company of Waterman, fearful for the livelihood of it's members, who operated ferries and river traffic generally. This book traces the struggle to overcome these prejudices, and the eventual success of a "Society of Gentlemen", determined to force the issue through. Weight approx. 800g. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Hard Cover + D/J. Very Good +/Very Good.
