About This Item

(Port Elizabeth: Historical Society of Port Elizabeth and Walmer, 1969). Port Elizabeth Series, number 1. Facsimile reprint of the 1868 privately published original. Number 68 of an edition limited to 500 copies. 250 x 160 mm; saddle-stitched wraps; pp. (vi) + 9; two monochrome illustrations. Lower cover partially sunned. Very good condition. "The writer pays tribute in this memoir to [Frederick] Korsten, who was - before the arrival of the 1820 Settlers, according to the sub-title - 'the Founder of the Eastern Province Commerce'. His 'Frontier Home' was Cradock Place. ... He was well-qualified both by his relationship to Korsten and his own great interest in, and knowledge of, the Eastern Cape, to which he had come as an 1820 Settler, to write about the old pioneer and his activities." .
