About This Item
Salem/Boston: A.A. Smith/Lee and Shepard, 1877. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Several years ago, we purchased many books from historian/educator Thomas Perkins. He was a descendant of Massachusetts settlers from the earliest era. This is one of his books and has the penciled note "To Warren Perkins" in a Spencerian hand, title page. It's exterior and binding were too rough for sale in my estimation. It has been restored by an expert of unparalleled ability. Boards retained and recovered in dark tan cloth, the dark brown labels (front and spine) have been retained and laid on to superb effect. End sheets also replaced with wholly age appropriate papers. Perhaps the handsomest 19th century book on our shelves. . .Spine is done with 6 ribs, text very sharp, 312 pages followed by 7 ads. Text is age darkened and not supple but quite decent. Foto will be made and added to this listing when time allows. Laid loosely inside the front covers is a sheet of wax paper covered note paper with perhaps 300 words of reminiscences, mentioned are Gov. Bradstreet, Moses G. Farnum, The Globe Tavern, Deliverance Parkman, and many others. I surmise from the hand that it was written at the turn of the century or well before. *We feel that books offered for internet sale should be described thoroughly and accurately. Books listed by Brass Dolphin are so described, and graded, using the strict, traditional standards. For this reason, we have virtually zero returns.*
