A Beautiful First Edition, 1925, First Edition stated, Heavily Illustrated Comprehensive Study of California's Missions. 379 pages, Quarto: 11.15 inches in height by 7.75 inches in width, Top Edge Gilt, color frontispiece of Mission San Gabriel and 240 black and white plates photographs and illustrations including 24 line drawings. Three appendices with lists of the Missions and construction dates, Spanish and Mexican Governors, list of Padres. Also explores the historical background of Spanish Renaissance and Rococo architecture brought to California by Spanish settlers. Newcomb was a professor of the history of architecture at the University of Illinois. Original very clean publisher's blue cloth with a gilt stamped Mission vignette on front cover, bright gilt title to spine. Book is Very Good Plus closer to near FINE, previous owner bookplate of renown collector, author and bibliophile Carl I. Wheat. also 2 other previous names or writing. dustjacket is in pieces and laid in. Quality Book from the Library of Carl Wheat.
