About This Item

1901. EATON, Charles Aubrey. THE OLD EVANGEL AND THE NEW EVANGELISM. Chicago: Fleming H. Revell Company, 1901. 12mo, green cloth, stamped in gilt; 162 pages. First Edition. Charles Aubrey Eaton [1868-1953] was a Canadian-born American clergyman. He represented New Jersey in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1925 to 1953 and participated in the creation of the United Nations. Signed presentation from Eaton on the front endpaper: "Mrs.Rockefeller, with affectionate regards from Charles A. Eaton. Christmas, 1903." The recipient is most likely Laura Celestia "Cettie" Rockefeller, wife of Standard Oil co-founder John D. Rockefeller. Eaton was preacher at Euclid Avenue Baptist Church, located on "millionaires row" in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1901, he became friends with John D. Rockefeller, who was a summer resident. "Cettie" Rockefeller was an abolitionist and, undoubtedly, she and Eaton were acquaintances. Eaton moved to Plainfield, NJ in 1909 and went on to become a congressman. A very scarce book, especially signed by the author. Very Good (covers bright; contents clean & tight). $150.00.
