About This Item
London: B. T. Bratsford , [1920]. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 10" by 7.5" . Not Stated . The first edition of this charming illustrated study of old crosses and lychgates by Aymer Vallance. Aymer Vallance proposes this collection of old crosses and lychgates, inspired by an article on "Churchyard Crosses" published by the Burlington Magazine in 1918. Written towards the end of the conflict during the Great War, it gave the nation an answer to the most suitable form of memorials for the dead, sacrificed day by day. Thus this work exploring the importance and significance of old crosses and lychgates in Britain. An undated copy, dated 1920 from Jisc, the first edition identified through the lack remarks on the edition. Embellished with a frontispiece and numerous plates and illustrations in text throughout. Collated, complete. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally sound with some shelf wear and some chipping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities; the cloth to the spine has slightly darkened. With some damp marking to the rear board. Internally, firmly bound. Only a minor offsetting to the endpapers, otherwise the pages are bright and clean with only the odd faint minor mark. Illustrated with a frontispiece and numerous plates and illustrations in text throughout. Collated, complete. Very Good
